Universal grammar is the idea that all human languages share a common, innate set of grammatical principles built into the human brain. This means children aren’t learning language only from imitation and external feedback; they’re guided by an internal, biological blueprint that shapes how sentences can be formed and understood. Noam Chomsky developed and popularized this theory in the mid-20th century, arguing that the ability to acquire language comes from an inherent language faculty and that the rules of grammar are part of our genetic endowment. This view contrasted with strictly behaviorist or structural approaches that emphasize learning from exposure and patterning rather than an inborn grammar.

The other researchers contributed important ideas about language structure and social use, but they did not propose universal grammar. Skinner focused on learning language through reinforcement and imitation, Saussure analyzed language as a system of signs and differences within a social structure, and Bloomfield emphasized descriptive, structural analysis of language without positing an innate universal grammar.
